“Conversations With HER is a project that I always had the title for, but I was unsure about when I would be able to write it because I hadn’t met HER. When I finally met HER, inspiration came immediately! Each song is based on a true story, and this body of work is my most vulnerable to date. It’s very honest & embodies a mix of emotions that allows the listener to have insight into my life at a particular point in time.” YG
Standing as the true definition of raw talent, UK rapper YJ is destined to take the world by storm as the next star to surface from the underground scene. With his complex rhymes and outstanding delivery, YJ has positioned himself as one of the
most promising rappers on the radar right now. Developing his sound over the years, the wordsmith creates a perfect blend of authentic hip hop, neo soul and gritty bornbred UK sounds.
YJ’s influences are a wide spectrum of different genres of music, growing up in an African household where music was the soundtrack to his days, listening to his father play Fela, King sunny Ade, Bob Marley, Dolly Parton etc and then being heavily influenced by the emerging sounds of Kano and Ghetts; artists he could relate with, who indirectly taught him about flow and delivery, about not being afraid of what you have to say and saying it in a way that people can connect with. His influence expanded into Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, just to name a few. They made him understand that is was ok to fully express your real thoughts without fear of judgement, to really be free in his music.
Earlier on in his career YJ had been fortunate enough to open for both Bow Wow and Mario as well as Nigerian musician 2 Face. YJ has also supported Hip Hop legends Method Man and Redman during their London show (July 2014). His efforts have also seen him reach the final top 3 of ‘The MOBO UnSung’ competition (2014). It’s safe to say that YJ is ready to embark on the following chapter of his story.
