The Album is a tribute to Madiba and my Dad – Idris Elba
Idris Elba Golden Globe Actor and DJ, will be releasing his album ‘mi Mandela’ on the 24th November. The album was inspired by traditional South African music and the statesman Nelson Mandela. Recorded in South Africa, Mali and London, at the Jazzwork’s Studio it was a passionate and heartfelt project for Idris who directed every part of the production including the artwork for the front cover which is a handwritten tribute to his supportive late father Winston.
Idris reflected on his decision to make the musical journey whilst filming the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ for nearly 8 months in South Africa.
“At the time I had my studio at the apartment I was staying in while I was making Mandela – a little keyboard, a laptop – and as an experiment to myself, I vowed to keep making music.”
The actor has enlisted musical greats, and local artistes and poets to share his musical vision and expression,creating strong ‘character pieces’ ‘character albums’ As the curator and Executive producer, Idris created the ultimate collaboration with South African artistes, combining their talents with contemporary Western pop and RnB music. Working directly with the high profile James Blake, Mumford & Sons, the incredible Thandiswa Mazwai, Aero Manyelo, Atlanta’s Cody ChesnuTT, Shaun Escoffery, Mr Hudson, Nothembi Mkhwebane, Spoek Mathambo and the London African Gospel Choir, he had defined the task and had begun the driven process to complete the journey.
The 11 songs were made with many collaborators, Blake sings on Nothembi Jam, the Mumford’s wrote a song called ‘Home’, and the dynamic ‘So Many People’ featuring Shaun Escoffery, there are also appearances by Cody Chesnutt, George the Poet and the South African female vocal harmony group Mahotella Queens. The record’s upcoming lead single, ‘You Give Me Love,’ features MC and singer Maverick Sabre.

Idris introduces ‘Mi Mandela’..on 7 Wallace and Parlephone Records which is released on November 27.
