Review: Aloe Blacc – Lift Your Spirit

The third album from Aloe Blacc “Lift Your Sprit.” Does to your heart, what it says on the cover. “Lift Your Sprit.” The intelligent ‘Gospel Soul’ vocal execution, makes this a most accessible and delightful album. Moving from an independent label, to a major (Interscope Records) has not blunted the quality, and the essence of this Soul Man.

“Lift Your Spirit,” is a resounding triumph of, optimistic folk-soul, tinged with the sound of Gospel and Blues. The sound leans on the greatness of Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. This soul heritage provides the albums cutting edge. A magical combination, that keeps the pop sensibilities contained within this album very real.

There are collaborations on this album, notably with the man of the monument Pharrell Williams. On the track “Love is the Answer.” Which delivers a Disco-funk grove. Which shall accompany feet on the dance floors this summer. Producer Theron Freemster (AKA Neff-U) lends his magic on the Gospel- Blues enthused “Wanna Be With You.” Theron Freemster is the Gospel sound “Go To Man.” Having worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to Mary J Blige. “Wanna Be With You” is embedded in the church. Chanting, clapping, tambourine, the repetitive trance signature is all over this track.

The track “The Man” bravely samples Elton John’s “Your Song.” The song was used as the backdrop to Dr Dre “Beats Headphone” advertisement. And has already been a US top ten hit. This album, especially with this song, was made to be a commercial success. Aloe Blacc’s voice delivers music with great depth, sensitivity and power. The music is easy on the ears. “Like a spoon full of sugar helps the ‘message’ go down.” Like all his past offerings, the lyrics on this album are definitely worth a second reading. The
perceptive lyrics entwined with the engaging tunes, makes this album recommended listening this spring.
